How To Improve Your Communication Skills
Good and clear communication is essential in the workplace. Relaying messages, passing on feedback or understanding verbal instruction are all items that need to be communicated clearly. How those messages are delivered or understood can be the ultimate difference between success or failure.
In this article, we’ll take a look at three ways that you can improve your communication skills. Being a strong and confident communicator will pay you dividends when it comes to career progression and really makes a difference in the workplace. With the rise of texting and social media, communication is becoming less formal so how can you be more professional and communicate in the right way? Let's take a look at point number 1…
1). Consider your body language when communicating
Body language is a major give away into a persons mind. When communicating it’s important to come across in a confident manner. Using gestures can impassion your conversation and provide for more engaging dialogue. Communicating with your hands in your pockets or with your arms folded can only make you look uninterested.
2). Make a note of key points
We’ve all been there before, we’ve been in a meeting and kept notes in our head, but haven’t actually written anything down. Naturally in a scenario such as this information will be forgotten. Consider taking notes in a future meeting rather than relying on your brain to hold and process everything. Note taking allows you to look and stay engaged in the conversation.
3). Take a moment to consider your response
It’s easy to fire out a response straight off the bat. You can do this both verbally and in written communication. If you feel strongly about a subject it’s likely that a response maybe instantly forthcoming. However, your response may not always be the best that it can be so before blurting out a response, take a moment to consider what you want to say. Doing this can save you from potential embarrassment later down the line.
