How To Make A Good Impression At Work
Hitting the ground running and making a great impression upon arriving at a new job is something we all strive to achieve. We know that first impressions count but how can you start at a new role in the best possible way and set out on the right path from the off?
We’ve all heard that first impressions count, but in the world of work, this couldn’t be truer. Human nature means we instantly make an assumption about a person. Rightly or wrongly this perception can take time to change so how do you set off on the right foot and fall into a new job as you desire?
In this blog post, we’ll take a look at a number of ways that you can do just that. Let's get straight into it with point number 1.
1). Positive outlook and attitude
This is a fundamental piece of the first impressions puzzle. People like to work alongside people that are driven and motivated. A person with a positive outlook can draw you into their way of thinking and in the long run, employees with a positive outlook can have strong knock-on effects on the rest of a team when it comes to overall team morale. No one wants to hear moaning or constant negative outlooks as this can drag entire teams down and affect productivity. When going into a new role it is important to remain open-minded and to remain positive, even in the face of potential adversity.
2). Drive your role
Take initiative. When starting a new position it’s easy to get through initial tasks set and then be unsure what to do next. Rather than sitting at your desk, it’s important to take the initiative and ask what you can do. Seek out tasks and execute them to the best of your ability. If you’re available, ask your colleagues if you can assist them. This way of thinking will show you in a positive can do light and reflect well on the rest of the team.
3). Make an effort
Making an effort with your new colleagues is a must. If you are invited to work socials try to make yourself available if possible. Occasions like this in a more relaxed environment allow for human relationships to form between colleagues and can allow more insight into what makes your teammates tick. Don’t isolate yourself and make yourself available to team events in the early stages of a new job. These events can accelerate how soon you feel at home.
