How to stay healthy in the workplace
It’s an aspect that most of us can’t escape. Having an office based job means that for the most part, we will be sat at our desks on most days of the week. Whilst this is a situation that can’t be helped, being sat down all day goes against what we need to be healthy as people, but what can be done to be more healthy in the office?
Our bodies require us to be active to remain in good shape. Having an office job means that there is dangerous potential to be completely sedentary if no fitness activity is undertaken outside of working hours. Not only is sitting down for long periods bad for our general health, but it can also be bad for our mental health too and both of these health areas are as important as each other.
Let's take a look at three ways you can maintain a more healthy lifestyle at work. A little effort is all it takes and these tips are far easier than you think, you may also be doing some of these already. Let's get into it.
1). Ensure you drink water frequently
Staying hydrated is essential. It’s important for all of our bodies major functions and can reduce the chances of developing headaches. It is frequently recommended that we need to drink up to two litres of water a day to stay properly hydrated. To achieve this, why not have a large water bottle on your desk or better still, take frequent breaks to a water fountain or tap throughout the day.
2). Take frequent breaks
Taking time away from your screen and desk should be another important part of your working day. Taking a break away from your screen allows a moment for your eyes to rest and provides for an opportunity to stretch your legs. Not resting your eyes can result in eye strain and tension headaches. It is also important to ensure that you have a regular eye test if your job involves sitting in front of a screen for the majority of your working day.
3). Actively manage stress levels
Stress is a major factor in our general health. Being stressed can mean higher heart rates and higher blood pressure, both of which are detrimental to our general health. It can be easy to become bogged down at work or feel helpless but actively managing our stress levels is important. Work methodically and tackle your tasks in a manageable way. If you feel that you are struggling, reach out to colleagues who may be able to help. In addition, its import to engage in activities that you enjoy outside of work to ensure that you have a balanced lifestyle.
Whilst these tips may sound common sense, it’s easy to let these pass in the working day. By taking on board and actioning the above points you are on the way to having a more balanced life. Points that help your wellbeing may also have a knock-on effect on your productivity for the better.
