Utilising Your Time Effectively

Time. We can never get enough of it and it always seemingly disappears all too quickly. When you feel like you’re being pulled from pillar to post, how do you make the most of the time available to you and how can you utilise your time effectively? In this article, we’ll look at a few ways that you can do just that.

Deadlines, client appointments, meetings at work our just organising your personal life, time is precious and how we use it effectively is really important. It’s easy to lose track of your tasks and feel like you don’t have time to achieve everything that you want to, however, taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture can allow you to get organised and use your time more effectively.

How can this be done? Let’s take a look at three points below…

1). Prioritise

It’s important to establish what is important. When you start your workday, for example, establish what is of the utmost importance and build your day around these tasks. Getting these tasks completed in a priority order means you are giving yourself a head start and have breathing space from a time point of view when it approaches the end of the day.

2). Block in time for unexpected events

It’s very rare in a working day that you don’t face unforeseen circumstances or new pieces of urgent work. Work is an infinite task that cannot be completed so it’s only natural that this will be the case. No matter how strong your timekeeping and scheduling is, all of this hard work can be undone by unexpected tasks cropping up. With this in mind, it is important to build in contingency time for unexpected tasks and project creep. Without this time buffer, all of your tasks risk being knocked back as a result so it is important to bear this in mind in any time and scheduling plan.

3). Establish your working time

Don’t over commit here. This needs to be a time that you can regularly commit to. It’s all well and good earmarking 50 hours within a working week to get tasks done, however, if you are only able to commit to 38 hours, you are already setting yourself up for a near impossible task. Be strict on yourself and establish your available working hours early on to avoid a scenario like this cropping up.
